Perboyre, Jean-Gabriel, 1802-1840

French Vincentian priest and missionary, who was a missionary in China from 1835. An early victim of persecutions ordered by the viceroy of Hubei province, he was subject to several trials, tortured, and ultimately condemned to death, which was confirmed by imperial edict, and martyred in 1840. He was canonized in 1996 by Pope John Paul II.
