Da Ponte, Niccolò, 1491-1585
Doge of Venice from 1578 to 1585. After training in philosophy, first in Padua and then Venice, he amassed a fortune as a merchant. He briefly taught philosophy at the Rialto in 1521, served as a diplomat and ambassador to Austria, France, and Rome, and was highly active in Venetian politics. He participated in the Council of Trent and was elected doge in 1578.
