Sallust, 86 BCE-34 BCE
Italian politician and historian, who was a partisan of Julius Caesar and was involved in naval operations off the coast of North Africa. Retiring from government service, perhaps due to accusations of corruption, he focused on writing and teaching history. His books De coniuratione Catilinæ and Bellum Jugurthinum, along with the works of Tacitus, endured as part of the canon of European education into the medieval and early modern periods.
