Wimpheling, Jakob, 1450-1528

French theologian, canonist, rhetorician, and poet, who studied at the universities in Freiburg, Erfurt, and Heidelberg. He was a preacher at the cathedral in Speyer in 1483. In 1498, he was invited by Philip the Upright, Elector Palatine (1448-1508), to teach rhetoric and poetry at the Universität Heidelberg. From 1500, he resided in Strasbourg under the patronage of Albert of Palatinate-Mosbach (1440-1506). Initially disappointed by the excommunication of Martin Luther, he professed loyalty to the Catholic faith from 1521 until his death in 1528. Among his writings are a tract on moral and ethical pedogogy for young men (Adolescentia, 1500) and a brief history of Germany (Epitome rerum germanicarum, 1505).
