Rzewuski, Wacław Seweryn, 1784-1831
Polish traveler, orientalist, and poet, who was from a noble family that held large estates in Ukraine and moved to Vienna with the Third Partition of Poland. Following a brief military career in the Austrian army, he became a traveler and orientalist, studying Turkish and Arabic and co-founding the academic journal Mines de l'Orient (1809-1819). Aside from his publications of maps, architectural plans, and recorded Bedouin music, he produced a volume on horses, which included illustrations of the culture of the Saudi Arabian Desert. He resettled in Poland with a large collection of Middle Eastern manuscripts, books, and artifects, both contemporary and old. He fought in the November Uprising (or Polish-Russian War of 1830-1831), and died under mysterious circumstances in May 1831.
