Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (Royal house : 1826-1918)

Founded in 1826 by Ernest Anton, the sixth duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, it is a cadet branch of the Saxon House of Wettin. The House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was the royal house in the United Kingdom from 1901-1917. It succeeded the House of Hanover following the death of Queen Victoria on January 22, 1901, taking the surname of her consort Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. On July 17, 1917, King George V changed the name from Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to Windsor because of anti-German sentiment in the United Kingdom during World War I. Cadet branches of the house became kings of Portugal, Belgium, and Bulgaria.
