Hanover (Royal house : 1635-)

George, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg (1582-1641) was the first member of the House of Hanover. The Hanover dynasty laid claim to the Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, later the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland (after 1801) with King George I (1714-1727) after the death of Queen Anne (1665-1714). The British Hanover royal line ended with the death of Queen Victoria I (1837-1901), when the British royal house became the line of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Kings George III, IV, and William IV ruled as Kings of Hanover as well as Kings of the United Kingdom from 1814-1837. Hanover became an independent kingdom in 1837, but ended in 1866 when it was annexed by the Kingdom of Prussia. Since 1866, heirs to the Kingdom of Hanover have resided in Austria. The Titles Deprivation Act 1917 removed British titles from the Hanover family.
