Burgundy (Royal house : 1139-1383 : Portugal)

The royal house of Burgundy in Portugal began with Afonso Henriques (d. 1185) after his victory at the Battle of São Mamede in 1139, becoming the first King of Portugal. The Burgundian line is a result of the marriage between Henry of Burgundy (d. 1112), Count of Portugal and grandson of Robert I, Duke of Burgundy, and Teresa Alfónsez (d. 1130), Countess of Portugal and the illegitimate daughter of King Alfonso VI of Castile and León. The Burgundy royal house in Portugal is not to be confused with Burgundy royal house in Castile and León, which descends from the family of the Counts of Burgundy and the legitimate daughter of Alfonso VI, Queen Urraca I (d. 1126). The Burgundy Royal House in Portugal ended with the death of King Fernando I in 1383, being replaced by the Royal House of Aviz.
