Trastámara (Royal house : 1369-1516)
Royal house from Castile that first succeeded to the crown of Castile and León in 1369 when Enrique de Trastámara (1334-1379), Señor de Haro, defeated his half-brother King Pedro I (1334-1369) at the Battle of Montiel on March 14, 1369, becoming King Enrique II of Castile and León. The Trastámara family gained control over the Kingdom of Aragón with the election of Fernando Trastámara at the Compromise of Caspe in 1412. It later gained control of the united Kingdoms of Sicily and Naples in 1442 under King Alfonso V of Aragón. The Trastámaras united the crowns of Aragón and Castile and León with the marriage of the cousins Fernando II of Aragón to Isabel I of Castile and León in 1469 and their succession to joint power with the Concord of Segovia in January 1475. The Trastámara royal house was replaced by the Habsburg dynasty in 1516 with the death of King Fernando II of Aragón and the ascension of Emperor Charles V as king of Castile and León and Aragón.
