Monastery of Saint Mary Magdalene (Valletta, Malta)
The Monastery of Saint Mary Magdalene was a monastery for women, established by Grand Master Martin Garzez (1526-1601) in 1595 for penitent prostitutes (repentite) in Valletta. In 1602, Pope Clement VIII gave the Monastery the rights to one-fifth of the wills of deceased prostitutes in Malta, providing the monastery an important source of income. The Monastery of Saint Mary Magdalene was suppressed in 1798 during the French Occupation, when the occupying forces seized the monastery's wealth. The last Magdalene nun died in 1846.
