General notes

Description
Discusses "a scribe with ties to the Melkite church hierarchy, Thalja ibn al-khūrī Ḥawrān al-Ḥamawī"; very little is known about his life; he refers to himself only as Thalja or Talja in his manuscripts and letters; Edward Pococke (1604-1691), Professor of Arabic in Oxford, refers to him as both Thalja and Michael; a marginal note also attributes him with the name Yuwāṣāf; must have been born in Hama in last quarter of 16th century, died ca. 1650; made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem at some point; brother of ʻAbd al-Karīm (1572-1635), who became bishop of Aleppo as Meletios Karma in 1612 and later Patriarch of Antioch in 1634 as Euthymius II; Thalja wrote some texts himself (a tractate on virtues/duties of priests addressed to his brother's successor, Patriarch Meletios, and letters to Pococke)
