Ventura, Gioacchino, 1792-1861
Italian Theatine theologian, philosopher, and preacher. Originally a Jesuit, he left the order in mid-1817 and entered the Theatine order in 1818. In reaction to the proposed dissolution of holy orders and secularizing principles following the revolution of May 1820, he published for a short time the newspaper Enciclopedia ecclesiastica e morale. He was a proponent of Catholic revivalism and was duly active in the censorship of books and as a preacher. He wrote a multi-volume work espousing Thomism, entitled De methodo philosophandi. Soon after, he was appointed consultant to the Curia's Congretaion of Rites and, at various times, was responsible for overseeing his order. In 1849, he went into exile in France because of his participation in the Risorgimento. He was a prolific orator, devoting his later years to preaching around France. Many of his sermons were compiled and published.
