Obicini, Tommaso, 1585-1632

Italian Jesuit linguist, lexicographer, and missionary to Palestine. He served as papal legate to the Chaldean Church in the mid-1610s, and was custodian of the Holy Land in early-1620s. Returning to Italy, he studied and taught Arabic and mastered Syriac, Hebrew, and Coptic, embarking on a career in translation and publishing. He is known for his translations of Scripture into Arabic and particularly for his Thesaurus Arabico-Syro-Latinus.
