Sampaio, Diogo de Carvalho e, 1750-1807

Portuguese jurist, diplomat, scientist, and knight of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. He studied law at the Universidade de Coimbra and served as a magistrate in Viana do Castelo. He joined the Order of Saint John at age 35. An amateur scientist of chromatics, he published Tratado das cores (1787) and Dissertação sobre as Cores Primitivas (1788) while in Malta. From 1789 to 1801, he resided in Madrid, where he was as a diplomat and an ambassador for Portugal.
