Đurđević, Ignjat, 1675-1737
Ignat Đurđević was born in Dubrovnik (Ragusa), the son of Bernard Đurđević and Teresa Zlatarić, being baptized as Nikola (Nicolò) Đurđević. A renowned poet, he bagan his studies with the Jesuits in in Dubrovnik before going to Rome to study the arts and theology. He professed as a Jesuit and taught rhetoric in Ascoli. Due to illness, he left the Jesuits and became a Benedictine and later abbot at the Monastery of Saint Mary (Otočić Sveta Marija) in Mljet, Croatia, part of the Republic of Ragusa. The Ragusan Senate chose Đurđević as councilor and theologian, while he also served as one of the leaders of the Academia Otisorum Eruditorum. Đurđević is noted for his poetry and the controversy over the shipwreck of Saint Paul, which he argued was in Mjlet (Croatia), not Malta.
