Petrarca, Francesco, 1304-1374
Italian humanist poet, philosopher, and diplomat. Trained in law at the universities in Montpellier and Bologna, he settled in Avignon to take minor orders due to financial constraints. He wrote poetry from an early age, continuing throughout his life in both Latin and Tuscan dialect, which would later influence the humanist movement and contribute to the foundations of the modern Italian language. Celebrated as a poet laureate, he travelled widely in Europe and, at times, in a diplomatic capacity. His most well-known works are a collection of 366 lyric poems in various genres and in the vernacular, entitled Rerum vulgarium fragmenta, and various published compilations of his own letters to contemporaries such as Boccaccio and other early humanists as well as to literary figures from antiquity such as Cicero and Virgil.
