Mātēwos, Metropolitan of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, approximately 1843-1926
Bishop of Šawā from 1881-1889 and metropolitan of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church from 1889-1926, Mātēwos was a close associate of Menilek from his arrival in Ethiopia from Egypt until the emperor's death. He maintained his position as a deeply influential metropolitan, both in ecclesiastical and political affairs, until his death in 1926.
