- Description
- Born 19 August 1844 in Ankobar; died 12 or 13 December 1913 in Addis Ababa; baptismal name Śāhla Māryām; grandfather was Śāhla Śellāsé, King of Šawā; father was Ḫāyla Malakot, King of Šawā; taken into captivity by Tēwodros II, Emperor of Ethiopia, in late 1855 and taken to the fortress of Maqdala; married a daughter of Tēwodros II, Emperor of Ethiopia, but left her behind when he escaped Maqdala in 1865; declared king of Šawā in 1865 upon his return; married Ṭāytu at Ankobar Madḫānē Ālam church on 23 April 1883; declared himself emperor following the death of Emperor Yoḥannes IV in March 1889, and was subsequently crowned emperor at Enṭoṭṭo on 3 November 1889; defeated the Italians, who had attemped to create a de facto protectorate of Ethiopia, at the Battle of Ādwā on 1 March 1896, resulting in European recognition of Ethiopia as an independent sovereign state, the only such independent African state at the turn of the century; suffered multiple strokes starting in 1906, leading to various parties vying for political control until his death in 1913
