Walé Beṭul, rās, -1918
An important nobleman of late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century Ethiopia, and brother-in-law to Menilek from 1883 onwards, Walē Beṭul often functioned as a key military commander for the future emperor both before and after his ascension to the imperial throne. He also served as governor of Yağğu district, and later of Gondar and Tegrāy provinces, obtaining the title of rās in 1889. A staunch supporter of his sister Ṭāytu when Menilek's health began to fail, Walē Beṭul and his son Gugsā Walē were ultimately defeated by the forces of Mikā'ēl (the later King of Wallo). After a period of imprisonment, he regained his governorship of Yağğu, maintaining it until his death in 1918.
