Caesarius, Johannes, 1468?-1550
Johannes was a very influential teacher of ancient Greek, with prominent friends of both Catholic and Protestant persuasion. After obtaining a master's degree from the University of Cologne, he taught at Deventer in 1508. The next year, while on an ambassadorial mission, he studied Greek in Bologna, which he taught when he returned to Cologne in 1510 and in Münster in 1513, founding the study of ancient Greek in North Rhine-Westphalia. He also earned a doctorate in medicine in Italy, practicing in Cologne as a physician. He taught at Mainz (1524, 1529), Leipzig (1527) and Moers (1546) and wrote on dialectics, grammar, and rhetoric. He died at Saint Michael am Weidenbach in Cologne, monastery or Fraterhaus of Augustinian Fraterherren (Brothers of the Common Life, also identified as Hieronymians).
