Caoursin, Guillaume, 1430?-1501
Guillaume Caoursin was vice-chancellor of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem and one of the most important authors of his time. He was born in Douai, at that time a part of Flanders, into a family from Rhodes. He received his doctorate in law from the University of Paris. Although he was in the service of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem for 40 years, he did not wear the Order's habit. He represented the order as an ambassador to various popes, particularly impressing Pope Innocent VIII, who appointed him apostolic secretary. Guillaume wrote an eye-witness account of the siege of Rhodes in 1480 called Obsidionis Rhodiae urbis descriptio, which was published in 1482. Guillaume also helped revise the statutes of the Order of St. John and translate them into French.
