White, Stephen, 1575-1647?

Irish Jesuit theologian, philosopher, and antiquary. He studied in Lisbon and Salamanca, joined the Society of Jesus in 1569, and taught philosophy and theology in Salamanca. In 1606, he moved to Germany, teaching scholastic theology in Ingolstadt and then in Dillingen. He was also an ecclesiastical historian and antiquary, writing the Apologia pro Hibernia adversus Cambri calumnias and copying numerous hagiographies held in German and Swiss monasteries. In roughly 1629, he returned to his native Ireland, where he taught at the short-lived Jesuit university in Dublin and resided at Jesuit houses in both Dublin and Waterford, and finally in Galway. Most of his scholarship has not survived, with his Apologia pro Hibernia edited and published much later in 1849.
