Ḫāyla Māryām Sarābyon, 1863-1919

Ḫāyla Māryām Sarābyon was sent to be educated in France after initial church education in Ethiopia. When he returned to Ethiopia at the end of the 19th century, he became one of the most important advisors of Emperor Menilek II. He served as a representative of the Ethiopian government on the board of directors of the Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway Company, and at the behest of Emperor Menilek, he designed the imperial coat of arms used until 1974. He founded eight parish schools and two churches.
