Hartmann, Georg, 1489-1564
Georg was a mathematician and instrument manufacturer who was a pioneer among Nuremberg sundial makers. He studied theology and mathematics in Cologne in 1506 and in Italy from 1510 to 1518. He became a priest, receiving several benefices which helped support his mathematical research. He designed brass astrolabes, which are now housed in museums around the world, and composed a detailed manual on their construction. He discovered the inclination of the Earth's magnetic field in 1544 but did not publish his discovery.
