Concone, Giuseppe, 1801-1861
Italian composer, musician, and music teacher from Turin, where he studied and began his career. In 1836, he produced the opera, Un episodio del San Michele, which was a failure. This led him to abandon this form of composition and to relocate to Paris, where he lived from 1837 to 1848 and received acclaim as a piano and singing teacher. Both in Turin and Paris, he composed secular music and published numerous instructional manuals for teaching piano, including melodies for piano by composers such as Franz Schubert (1797-1828), and for vocal training, which proved influential and enduring. Concone returned to Turin in 1848, amid the revolutions of the time, and revisited theatrical composition with Graziella, this time achieving success. He was soon named organist of the Palazzo reale and awarded a knighthood in the Ordine dei Santi Maurizio e Lazzaro. He died in Turin on June 1, 1861.
