Vimioso, Francisco de Portugal, conde de, approximately 1485-1549
Portuguese nobleman and poet who, as the legitimized son of Afonso of Portugal (1440-1522), bishop of Évora, descended from the houses of Braganza and Aviz. He was a royal councillor and government official during the reigns of Manuel I and João III.. He was a military officer in the war against the Wattasid dynasty in north Africa, being present at the (second) siege of Asilah in 1509 and fighting in the battle of Azemmour in 1513. For his distinguished service, king Manuel I made him first conde de Vimioso in 1515. His is best known for his poetry, which has been compiled and published numerous times under the title Poesias e sentenças.
