Bourbon (Royal house : 1589-1830)

Main branch of the Bourbon family and cadet branch of the Capetian royal house. The Bourbons ruled France from 1589-1792 and in Spain from 1700-1808. The house began as lords of Bourbon in the 12th century, and later Dukes of Bourbon in the thirteenth century, and ascended to the crown of France in 1589 under King Henry IV, then king of Navarra. The family gained control of the Spanish crown in 1700 as part of the War of Spanish Succession, ruling there until 1808. The French Revolution deposed and executed King Louis XVI in 1792, and his brother Louis XVIII was restored to the crown in 1814. He was succeeded by King Charles X in 1824, who was forced to abdicate in favor of the Orleans branch (House of Orleans) of the Bourbon family in 1830. Other branches of the Bourbon family survive today, including the House of Orleans, House of Bourbon-Anjou, and House of Bourbon-Parma.
