Pubblica Università di Studi Generali (Valletta, 1769-1798)

Grand Master Emanuel Pinto da Fonseca (1681-1773) expelled the Jesuits from Malta in 1768 and acquired the property of the Collegium Melitense founded by the Jesuits in 1592. He refounded the Collegium Melitense as the Pubblica Università di Studi Generali in 1769. The new Pubblica Università di Studi Generali was closed by the French after Napoleon Bonaparte's conquest of Malta in 1798. The French government in Malta opened a new École Centrale as an educational institution with a limited curriculum, not to be seen as an official successor of the former university. The École Centrale lasted only a few months.
