Order of Saint Maurice

The Order of Saint Maurice was established in 1434, at the Château de Ripaille (on the southern shore of Lake Geneva) by Amadeus VIII, first Duke of Savoy (reigned 1391-1440). Under Grand Master Duke Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy (1553-1580), Pope Gregory XIII merged the order with the Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem with the bull Pro commissa nobis on November 13, 1572.
