Kantzow, Thomas, approximately 1505-1542
Thomas studied at the Universität Rostock in 1526 and became secretary to a number of Pomeranian dukes, earning various benefices. In 1538 Kantzow moved to the Universität Wittenberg to pursue further studies under Philipp Melanchthon. Developing Johannes Bugenhagen's chronicle of Pomerania, he collected historical news while a secretary and wrote a chronicle in Low German. While in Wittenberg, he converted his history into High German. His longtime colleague Nikolaus von Klemptzen supported this endeavor, and after Thomas's death, Nikolaus published a new version of Thomas's work under the title Pomerania.
