Kāśā Ḫāylu, leʻul rās, 1880-1956
The most powerful Ethiopian nobleman during the reign of Emperor Ḫāyla Śellāsē, leʻul rās Kāśā Ḫāylu began his government service in the late nineteenth century in a military capacity and would quickly became a page and junior officer for Emperor Menilek. Menilek appointed him governor of a district in 1902/3, and the territory he administered increased massively over the next decades, ultimately leading to the august title of leʻul rās in 1929. Appointed Field Marshal five years later, Kāśā Ḫāylu was a leading military commander against the Italians during their occupation of Ethiopia, and would later serve as President of the Imperial Crown Council. He was the gabaz of Dabra Libānos monastery from 1900 until his death in 1956.
