Description
Horse name: Abbā Šānqo; alternate name (Arabic): Mīkā'īl b. imām ʻAlī; alternate name: Mikā'ēl ʻAlī; born ca. 1847-1850 in Tantā, Wallo; died 8 September 1918 in Holatā, Šawā; born Muslim and converted to Christianity; granted title of rās by Emperor Yoḥannes IV but had to share the governorship of Wallo with his rival Abbā Wāṭaw; gained governorship of all of Wallo in February 1886; grandfather in-law of Ḫāyla Śellāsē, Emperor of Ethiopia; married both the step-daughter and daughter of Menilek II, Emperor of Ethiopia; involved in many rebellions against other rulers; crowned king on 31 May 1914, and was in charge of Tegrāy, Wallo, Gondar, and Goğğām provinces soon thereafter; appointed gabaz of Enṭoṭṭo Rāgu'ēl church by Menilek II, Emperor of Ethiopia; defeated and taken prisoner at the battle of Sagalē on 27 October 1916; reburied with honors at Tantā Mikā'ēl church in the 1920s
