Leontorius, Conradus, 1460-1511
Conradus studied in Italy and France around 1465, eventually joining the Cistercian monastery of Maulbronn. In 1489, he became secretary to Jean de Cirey the abbot general of the Cistercian order (-1503 CE) in Dijon. He then became a conventual at the Abbaye de Pairis (Orbey, France). He also served as confessor to the Cistercian convent of Engenthal near Muttenz. He promoted the study of Classical Latin and Greek and was inspired by his friend and sponsor Johannes Reuchlin to study the Hebrew language in order to better understand the Holy Scriptures. Leontorius maintained close connections with other humanists such as Jacob Wimpfeling, Johannes Trithemius, and Konrad Celtis, as well as with the Basel printers Johannes Petri, Johannes Froben, and especially Johannes Amerbach. Besides writing numerous Latin poems, orations, and epistles, Conradus published the Latin Bible with the Postilla and Moralitates of the Oxford Franciscan Nicolas de Lyra, together with the Additiones of Paul of Burgos (-1435) and the Replicae of Mathias Thoring (-1469).
