Leitner, Alojzy, 1820-1908

Records from the Collegium Urbanum de Propaganda Fide in Rome identify Alozjy Leitner as being part of the Archdiocese of L'viv, but he was noted as coming from "Vallacus" and "Valascus ex missione Jasliensi," which implies coming from Wallachia in Romania or Moldova. In 1845, he was part of the commission to record the testimony of Makryna Mieczysławska. For political reasons, he asked to go to the United States in 1845, and there he became a professor at Mount St. Mary College in Emmitsburg, Maryland, from 1846-1849. He later moved to several parishes on the east coast in Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Illinois, working several years in Chicago. He left for Algeria from 1894-1899, before returning to Chicago in 1899 to be the chaplain at the De La Salle Institute. From 1857, he began using the name Louis, and later after 1863 his surname was recorded as Lightner. He died in Chicago and is buried in Calvary Cemetery.
