Dārgē Śāhla Śellāsē, rās, approximately 1830-1900

A son of King Śāhla Śellāsē of Šawā, Dārgē grew up in Ankobar and became a significant regional military leader after the death of his father. Although appointed governor of Šawā by Tēwodros II, he was subsequently imprisoned by the emperor at the fortress of Maqdala, regaining his freedom via the British victory in April 1868. Upon returning to Šawā, he served as governor of Bulgā and became an important military and political associate of his nephew Menilek, being granted the title dağğāzmāč in 1871 and rās in 1878. A major benefactor of many churches, particularly Feččē Gannata Giyorgis, Rās Dārgē died in March 1900 after suffering from chronic maladies for many years and was buried at Dabra Libānos.
