Barcelona (Royal house : 1164-1410)

Medieval dynasty that began with the Counts of Barcelona in the 9th century. The dynasty became a royal house in 1164 with the ascension Alfonso II of Aragón (1157-1196), the son of Ramon Berenguer IV (d. 1162), Comte de Barcelona e Provence, and Queen Petronila of Aragón (1136-1173), daughter of Ramiro II of Aragón (1086-1157). The military activities of the House of Barcelona led to the acquisition of several Iberian, Italian, and Greek kingdoms and duchies, creating what has been called the Aragonese Mediterranean Empire. The dynasty ended with the death of Martin I, King of Aragón, in 1410. The royal house was replaced by a branch of the Castilian Trastámara royal house at the Compromiso de Caspe in 1412.
