Ḫāylu Takla Hāymānot, Rās, approximately 1868-1951
The youngest son of King Takla Hāymānot of Goğğām, he was appointed Fitāwrāri ca. 1882 and Dağğāzmāč approximately a decade and a half later. Chosen by Emperor Menilek to govern Goğğām after his father's death in early 1901, he quickly became embroiled in the first of multiple political plots, which led to his imprisonment until 1906. Assuming the governorship again shortly after his release, he was subsequently elevated to the rank of Rās and took the name Ḫāylu, ultimately becoming one of the richest and most powerful men in Ethiopia. Another political plot landed him in prison in the early 1930s, with his release engineered by the occupying Italians in 1936, with whom he would collaborate throughout the following years, briefly returning to the governorship of Goğğām in 1941. After the return of Emperor Ḫāyla Śellāsē to Ethiopia, Rās Ḫāylu spent most of his remaining years in Addis Ababa until his death in 1951.
