Takla Hāymānot, King of Goğğām, approximately 1850-1901

The leading figure of late-nineteenth century Goğğām, Takla Hāymānot was appointed governor of the province in approximately 1868, wedding Lāqač, sister of the Emperor, around the same time. He was crowned king in January 1881, a rank that he held until his death on January 11, 1901. In addition to various military adventures, Takla Hāymānot was a strong patron of the arts and crafts in his kingdom and founded several churches, most notably the one dedicated to Mark at Dabra Mārqos.
