Croiset, Jean, 1656-1738. Vies des saints pour tous les jours de l'année

Jean Croiset published his work to provide meditative exercises for each day of the year as a new form of piety based on the liturgical office associated with the lives of the saints. It was modelled on earlier publications, such as Alonso de Villegas' Flos sanctorum published in Toledo in 1578, and especially Pedro de Ribadeneyra's Flos sanctorum o año christiano published in 1599-1601. The Vies des saints pour tous les jours de l'année, published in two volumes in 1723, is itself an excerpt from Croiset's original 12 volume publication, the Exercices de pieté pour tous les jours de l'année, published in Lyon by Antoine Boudet between 1712-1720.

Publication history

The Exercices de pieté pour tous les jours de l'année was published in twelve volumes in Lyon by Antoine Boudet between 1712-1720. This original work was reissued in six volumes in Lyon between 1721-1723. Antoine Boudet began publishing shorter excerpts related to particular lives of the saints, or the life of a saint, or the Virgin Mary. The Vies des saints pour tous les jours de l'année was the first of these excerpted editions, forming new works based on the original twelve-volume work.
