Cesti, Antonio, 1623-1669. Pomo d'oro

Il pomo d'oro was an opera written for the wedding of Emperor Leopold I in 1666 and first performed in an open-air theatre in Vienna in 1668 in a famously lavish production that stretched over two days. It was expensive, including a large orchestra, numerous choruses, and various mechanical devices for deus ex machina, naval battles, collapsing towers, and storms. The staging was designed by Ludovico Ottavio Burnacini and featured a libretto by Francesco Sbarra.
